Words matter…

Words can make you, words can mar
A few words may heal, many words can scar
Some are mesmerizing, some are just utterly bizarre,
Harmony of words joins us together in Peace,
Might of words shatters even world into a war

Guard the integrity of Soul….
Words can swish through it,
either a black hole or a shining star
Some words make you stoop so low
Some can genuinely raise the bar
Mere words shrivel up as time goes on
Actions impart life; take the words too far

So, “Think before you speak”
and ” Think twice before you write”
Because words can break you, words can mar
Only a few words heal, but many words definitely scar!

Nigaar-e-Urdu

Some days ago, while having a tête a tête during tea break, with my “Lucknowi” friend, we were admiring the beauty of Urdu language. What I could I possibly add to compliment it.. when renowned poets themselves have presented testimonials in the honour of this language…for me..

Urdu is not what we speak with tongue… it’s sort of a sophisticated, melancholic yet incredibly sweet language that comes off straight from a soul burdened with a broken mad heart and a composed sane mind.

Urdu was my second language at school and it was generally perceived as the toughest course among the students. I still remember how scary were the syllabi spanning all categories- Ghazal, Doha, Nazm, Qasidah, Rubaiyat, etc. and most questions would pertain to give an explanation of what poets had summarized in two or three lines. For my Urdu home work, I always required guidance of Dad, funnily enough Physics, Mathematics never bothered me so much😅

After discussing the charm of this language with my friend, we concluded:-

How intricately poets wring the worldly miseries of indefinite time into countable word-string of pearls!!

Back at the school, we stressed more on the detailed accounts with extensive vocabulary and rarely attempted to imbibe the ‘Art of brevity’ which has been a literary treasure for years!
It reminds me of a spectacular poem by an eminent Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz…

Nazm: Mujh se pehli si Mohabbat mere Mehboob na maang*

Some struggles of the life are so aptly entwined into these amazing lines, a person undergoing such turbulent times may take scrolls to express but aren’t these few lines just the perfect swap??

The lines are from a famous poem (Nazm) Mujhse pehli si Mohabbat mere Mehboob na maang ( Don’t ask me for the Love I had once for you, my Love):-

My eyes tend to return to catch glimpses (of You) but what can be done now; I’m quite helpless

Even now, your Beauty enchants me, but what can be done…

There’re certainly other griefs in this world apart from the longing for one’s Beloved

There’re other reliefs in this world, not only the comfort of Union!

Legacy of Endurance

I knew a part of her will live in us forever..she left us a legacy of endurance!

I’ve been inspired by a number of wonderful women in my life. Often, I plan to write about them but the list, Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), is so long that idea of pulling off that write up in one go, shudders me. One of such beautiful souls, was my grandmother. It’s not that I’m related to her by blood but the reverence other people, held in their hearts for her, reinforced my faith in her. She was so young at heart, God fearing, compassionate, hospitable and generous. In my opinion, I don’t think most of the people meted out the same behavior to her but that didn’t not stop her from being herself.

She was an epitome of this adage “Do good to people and forget”.

Most of us do good because we expect good in return and we end up being hurt because the bitter truth is no one ends up meeting our expectations ever. Then, we stop doing good in the first go, unfortunately.

Another amazing trait of her, was patience. How bravely she endured every hardship of life… is a mystery to me. Good people are subjected to trials and tribulations throughout their lives even for small rewards. I wonder how transgressors dwell in wealth, fame and security, but then, I think that in God-Man relationship, though all men will not be subservient to Lord on equal level but God has to deliver justice to all.. He’s Rabb-ul-Aa’lameen (Lord of the Worlds) not Rabb-ul-Muslimeen (Lord of Muslims) or Rabb-ul-Mu’mineen(Lord of Believers) only.

Sometimes I contemplate over what good is it, in staying away from Kashmir? One of the reasons is, I won’t remember her so often. Back at home, joy of spring would remind me of her fragrance, chill of snow would remind me of her woes, season of walnuts would remind me of her laughter, rhythm of Kashmir would remind me of the beats of her golden heart…this is it.. I’m done.. signing off for now…

Honesty is the freaking best policy!!

Honesty is as slippery as snow😅

We grow up learning about virtues and morals from our family, school and it goes on perpetually throughout our lives. Many of you will agree with following proverb about Honesty being instilled in our heads, way before we could get into meaning of Moral Science for real.

“Honesty is the best policy“, quoted by Benjamin Franklin is something, we took as a principle of life.

We wrote passages, essays, stories to manifest our thoughts on this quote.I’ll narrate one of the many incidents where it felt harder to execute this policy than to express it in hollow words.

One fine day I went to Lal Chowk with my Mother for shopping. After shopping, we decided to eat at Shakti sweets. I went to counter, ordered gajar ka halwa* and some sweets. The guy gave some paper based token. I went to billing area, paid the bill and collected items from the former guy.Halwa was deliciously yum. It was, I guess the month of October and out of the blue, snow began to fall. It was unexpected as there was no such weather forecast. We left the place, got wet, buses and people fled hurry scurry. Finally, after so many impediments, we reached home.

At home, Mummy casually looked at both token and the bill and found out Halwa was not charged at all. It was a petty amount and I excitingly exclaimed, “That’s how ‘free’ halwa was scrumptious!”. I thought after going through so many bad things, free halwa was kind of a reward.

After two or three days, my mother told me to get ready for another trip to Lal Chowk. She took me straight to the same shop again. We ordered some stuff and she paid bill with that previous pending amount. The billing person was taken aback but my Mother insisted that we surely owed that much amount.

I thought ‘free halwa’ was not an intentional mistake so it was not a big deal. That was my point of view but my mother was looking at a bigger picture. On my part, I was more worried about catching a cold or fever due to non-conducive weather that messed up these 3-4 days. But what worried my mother was totally a different dimension. So, my Mom gave me a piercing look and said,

You will grow up into what you see me as and I don’t want to set a bad example for my posterity even if it’s by mistake“.

Luckily I felt better the next day physically and spiritually. I don’t remember any essays or passages I wrote, but the practical learning from that incident made one thing clear:

To be honest is not easy peasy job at times, apparently it may not be even the best choice as far as our interests are concerned, it comes at a hefty price but it’s always, always worth it!

Beauty and the Beast

A dear friend of mine once asked me about Radar Blind speed..I meticulously put down the formula on paper and showed it to her with excitement owing to the mere fact of remembering it at once. She said she was not interested in the equation at all but wanted to visualize how come radar turns blind to such a target. My wits went spirally down..I knew it…but to put the thing into words without dragging in mathematical explanation, seemed a bit complicated. I flipped through the book, revived my concepts and voila.. the phenomenon was once again crystal clear. To top it, the teeny equation that had earlier jiggled out of my memory, seemed to make it more comprehensible now.

This evening I’m ‘looking’ at some other equation, trying to figure out how each parameter is acting as a factor of improvement or degradation for the dependent variable, correlating each with the physical implications. Meanwhile, Beauty and the Beast song is being aired on T.V. A mixed parody starts playing in my head:-

How complex physical processes are over simplified through the beauty of equation; how the beast of modelling every single process mars its physical significance to some extent.

Never mind, I flap the book away and hum along…

Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the Beast
Oh equations.. you’re of the Science😓
Beauty and the Beast!!!
